Individuals who have been issued fines for violating traffic regulations and have not paid them through online or virtual court systems may now have the opportunity to avoid legal proceedings for a limited time, subject to approval from the High Court. If the High Court supports this measure, individuals with outstanding fines may be granted a one-month grace period to settle their dues and circumvent potential court actions. However, if they fail to comply within this timeframe, they will inevitably face court proceedings.
Previously, cases that were not resolved through online or virtual courts had been transferred to the relevant Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) courts. However, if the High Court instructs, these cases could be redirected back to the virtual court system. Respondents will then be given another chance to settle their fines within the specified one-month period.
In the current process, cases filed by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) and the police are initially uploaded onto the challan software platform. This system allows respondents a one-month window to clear their dues online. Individuals who have registered their phone numbers with their vehicle documents will receive SMS notifications informing them of the imposed fines. They can also check their fine status online. Following this notification, respondents have 60 days to resolve their cases through the virtual court system. Cases that remain unresolved after this period will be transferred to conventional courts. Notably, about 4.5 lakh unresolved cases over a six-month period have already been distributed among various CJM courts across the state.
The integration of e-court software with virtual courts has facilitated the transfer of cases. Until these cases are resolved, all services related to vehicles and licenses will be suspended.
To pay fines online, individuals can visit www.Echallan.parivahan.gov.in/index/accused after receiving an e-challan number via SMS. Those who do not receive SMS notifications can verify their status using the ‘vehicle number’ option on the portal. Additionally, individuals can check their driving license status by entering their DL number. If a case has been registered against them, fines can be paid by entering the e-challan number and other necessary details under the e-challan option. Furthermore, individuals can check whether their case has been referred to court through the ‘check challan status’ link under ‘check online services’ on the portal.
